Over the Christmas break at the end of 2018, a skeleton crew worked hard to complete the landscaping at the revamped Union House Precinct to ensure the University’s non-negotiable deadline of the 2019 Fringe Festival could be met.
The scope of works included feature clay paving, concrete unit paving, new garden beds with river pebble mulch throughout and a new turf area. Attention to detail and a high level of skill were required for our paving crew to execute the detail in the distinctive ‘rug-like’ clay paving pattern.
The result of the redeveloped Union House Precinct is a larger, more flexible and accessible recreational space in which students can socialise and events can be held day or night. A significant area of green space has also been reclaimed from car parking. The extended turf area plus new landscaping contributes to the health and well-being of all who use the city campus.
This is one of several projects that Outside Ideas has completed for the University of Adelaide over the years. We have also been responsible for external upgrades to the Engineering South Courtyard, the Mawson Building and the Badger Laboratories. The Union House Precinct Level 2 Activation project was nominated for the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (SA Chapter) Cultural Heritage Award in 2019.
