Outside Ideas was engaged by Peregrine Corporation in late 2022 to deliver a 9,900 square metre concrete drag racing strip and burnout pad for The Bend motorsport park in Tailem Bend.
This project was won off the back of Outside Ideas’ extensive experience in constructing velodromes. Work began on site in December 2022.
Concrete was poured in a chequerboard pattern to cater for the inclusion of expansion joints throughout the strip. The tolerance for this project was a very tight 6mm variance over a 10-metre distance. The timing of all pours was scheduled in close consultation with the structural engineering consultant WGA to ensure the concrete was placed and curing treatment applied before the local winds picked up, to minimise the risk of concrete shrinkage. Outside Ideas’ curing methodology, employed to minimise localised cracking and avoid shrinkage, was deemed as excellent by WGA and will be recommended as best practice on future projects.
During the construction phase, an additional package of work to build concrete barriers next to the dragway surface was also awarded to Outside Ideas. Work was completed in March 2023.
