The City of Adelaide awarded Outside Ideas awarded the Charles Street Streetscape Upgrade in July 2024.

This project comprised of an upgrade to the existing streetscape between two major buildings and undercover with a low clearance. The works needed to be staged to meet a nonnegotiable Council deed with a strict deadline. The scope included demolition of the existing roadway and associated infrastructure, electrical, new stormwater and trench drains, concrete slabs and mortar laid granite paving consisting of ten paving types ranging from different stone types and formats.

Through careful staging and coordination with major stakeholders (including Precision Group, Peregrine Group and AEDA), we maintained north-south pedestrian and business access at all times throughout the construction phase. We undertook significant service location and proving to mitigate service clashes and assist with adapting the design to minimise the amount of service relocation required.

Works were accelerated to meet Council’s deadline. Outside Ideas used in-house resources to undertake double shifts and provide extra labour to efficiently accelerate and optimise the program. This was all achieved by monitoring and reporting costs to council for acceleration works to ensure the project remained within the budget. The project was completed in February 2025 on time and within Council’s nominated budget.
